I stumbled upon this method for making some amazing looking eggs using thrift store silk ties!
I'm not one to get all excited about dyeing Easter eggs. Usually I kind of moan and groan about it but do it for the kids. This year I did a random google search about dying eggs and found this and actually got excited. Sollie and I went off to the thrift store and came back with $13 worth of old silk ties. Not exactly the 50 cent a piece bargain I was hoping for but what the heck.
The kids really got into the dismantling of ties. Margo sat quietly with the seam ripper and and took the lining out while Sollie cut the ties open with the scissor. I cut out the pieces to fit over the eggs.
I also had to cut out a bunch of white strips of cloth to tie on the outside of the silk layer.
We wrapped them all up and secured with rubber bands, put in a pot of warm water with a quarter cup of vinegar and let simmer for twenty minutes.
It was really fun to unwrap the eggs and see how each tie pattern turned out.
I think I know what I'll be looking for in thrift stores from now on... I'll never look the same way at an ugly old tie.
