Life with Solomon & Margo

Orcas/Lopez 2006
As usual we celebrated the arrival of Summer on the San Juan Islands. This year my sister Keri and niece Miranda as well as Jon's dad his wife Leslie their daughter Rose joined us at Doe Bay. We had a very relaxing time there enjoying the views and soaking in the tubs. The kids enjoyed playing on the beach but the sand in the volley ball court was the favorite, which was nicely viewable from our porch in our trailer/cabin. Poor teenage Miranda was pretty miserable at first, especially when we were sitting on the beach and three naked men came running down from the tubs to jump in the bay. (The beach and tubs at Doe Bay are clothing optional). She was a good sport though and seemed to enjoy some of the trip and was very helpful with the kids. The girls went on a little kyaking trip the first time for Keri, Miranda and myself. It was fun but we didn't see much of any thing. Then Miranda had a nice surprise when seal decided to make friends with her as she was heading in. Jon and I were able to have a nice meal out together with his dad and Leslie, free from the preschoolers. That was a treat. We had a nice little hike down part of the way from Mr. Constitution, although Sollie kept tripping on roots and didn't have too much fun "hiking". Keri and Miranda headed over to Idaho to my parents cabin and Jon and I went over to camp on Lopez for a night. Ken and Leslie stopped off there with us and help set up camp before heading back home. We had a nice night camping in a borrowed tent- very spacious. Sollie didn't sleep very well on the ground and kept wiggling out of his sleeping bag and waking up cold. So it made for an interesting night. But we had a fun filled day on Lopez. Spent some time on the beach, got some coffee and yummy baked treats, went to the Lopez Farmer's market. We ran into a woman Jon works with at Amazon who recently built a lovely house there. Broke camp, I rode my bike into town again, Jon took Sollie to a play ground. We had lunch then Jon got to go for a bike ride while I played with the kids at Spencer Spit. The last day there was hot and beautiful. We caught the late ferry, reluctantly. Each time we go out there we dream of ways we could spend more time there. Our latest plan is to buy some land, nothing fancy no beach access or view, just a little pastoral space and stick a yurt on it and live there in the Summers. Maybe some day...
