So I had a crafty friend over today and we dyed up the playsilks I bought from dharma trading
I bought six of the biggest ones they have and gave one of them to her little girl for her birthday with a kool-aid dying play date certificate attached to it... but they couldn't find it, so we dyed another scarf instead.
I used this method of dying from this woman's blog: Confessions of a Stash Junkie
I tried using the canning jar method but I think my silks were too big, they came out very mottled. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I stuck the purple one back in some red and it turned out pretty cool. The green is a little lame, if I ever find blue again I'll probably try double dying. Word on the street is they aren't making Berry Blue any more. Too bad because it's a really nice kid's blue! Although I may still go check a couple more grocery stores and see if they have any left and if they do I'll buy them out.. I'm pretty sure it was a QFC I found them at last year when I dyed the yarn. I remember I went to several different grocery stores and it was really hard to find. I almost bought a huge box from Amazon but talked myself out it... now I kind of wish I had! Who knew they'd stop making it. Of course who would want their kid to drink something that's bright blue? It makes great dye though.
The problem with this method, besides the size of the scarf you're dying, is there's not a lot for kids to do. You can have them dump packets into the jars, stir, and put scarves into jars but that's about it though.
Although they seemed to have a good enough time with that and picking out their kool-aid colors.
I think I'll keep looking for some Berry Blue and maybe order a couple of smaller sized scarves. I realize now that bigger isn't always better, the biggest size is almost too big for Margo, she trips on them.
