Planning my Homeschool

Went to drop off books at the library and pick up some groceries at the store today. The kids decided it should be baking day today. So we are making French bread and cookies later.
In the grocery store someone asked Solomon if he was getting ready for school and he said, "no!".
She said oh, are you going to wait another year and I said, "one or two... or three... "
If you don't already know our local public school has gone to full-day kindergarten for all as well as lengthening the day by an half an hour. That would be 9 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.
The attempt to start a school has dissolved and I decided I needed to just be done with it for the sake of my friendship with the other person I was working on this with... enough said.

I'm really very excited about our plans for the fall though. I put an ad in Craig's list to look for a mother's helper a couple of days a week- to give me a little break. And then Jon pointed out that we could put him in an after school program two days a week. That would be 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm but you can pick-up any time. It's run by the YMCA. It would give me a break and him some free play time with other kids his own age. Perfect! Well, I called and double checked the school we wanted had openings on the days we wanted before filling out the form on-line. The woman assured me they did. I filled out the form, only to get an email back saying there wasn't space and he was being wait-listed. Am I being discriminated against? I mean I understand that some working parents depend on this for child-care but I specifically asked if he had to be enrolled in the school or if it was open for homeschoolers and there was no policy. So I'm more than just a little irritated. I sent an email pointing out all of these things and have not received a reply back. So, we'll see what happens.

I'm also going to sign him up for homeschool swim lessons at the Y on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Solomon is a great swimmer! We stayed in a hotel with an outdoor pool the other night and he was swimming all around, treading water for long periods of time in 8 feet deep water. Totally confident and having a great time. In fact we couldn't get him out of the pool! I'm excited for him to take up swimming again now that he has his confidence back.

I also signed him up for a homeschool science series through Metro Parks and the Nature Center. It was inexpensive and hopefully it will be fun and interesting.

I've also been digging into my Enki curriclum and making plans for the year. I was afraid it was going to be really overwhelming to plan, a critique I've heard about Enki but I'm not feeling it at all. I'm just excited. I'm excited to delve into the stories and the songs Enki has to offer. It's really sort of a Kindermusik curriculum. In fact a lot of the songs we are already familiar with from our Kindermusik classes. I'm going to start out with a cultural theme of India, I ordered a couple of books from Barefoot Books to supplement. Diwali is October 28th this year, so we'll end the theme with the actual festival, which I'm hoping we will get an invite to from a friend. I'm also hoping she will do a little cooking class for the kids and me.
I love how the Enki curriculum just becomes apart of our day and it's really not all that different from what I already do, there will just be a little more structure to it- which I really need! We will have a co-op day, there's a group that meets up in Seattle that I've been in contact with. Then a baking day, a painting day, a craft day and an adventure day! Jon has offered to fill in on Fridays and even a weekend day, so we will have to figure out just how it will work. I'm thinking Tuesday and Thursdays will be a free/lazy day except for the Y swim in the afternoon.
The days will be tied together by a story time, "core story" and circle time where we will sing and move. The weeks will be tied together by themes, like our India theme. There's no actual sitting down and writing letters or phonics reading in the kindergarten curriculum, that's first grade. So I'm happy to skip it and just unschool as far as things like go, if he shows an interest we will pursue.

My energy hasn't been great lately, I can't wait until the end of the first trimester! I'm 8 weeks tomorrow and I swear I'm already showing! What's up with that? My biggest fear right now is that I'm pregnant with twins and I will get risked out of midwifery services! It seriously has been keeping me up at night. Although logically I know it's just the third pregnancy and your body expands faster, right?
