Sollie took a mental health day from school on Monday and we headed up to the Woodland Park Zoo to meet up with some friends. I sort of got over my fear of pulling him out of school to play "hooky" when I realized that the schools don't seem to do field trips any more. At least it's now March and he hasn't had one yet and I haven't heard of anything being planned. So mental healths day... I embrace thee!
We met up with the old Enki homeschool play group and Sollie soon remembered who these boys were ; ) He literally ran around the zoo all day, for probably a good five hours non-stop. That night he woke up screaming and continued to scream for two hours! That is how our mental health day turned in to two sick days. Turns out we caught something; Sollie ran a slight fever yesterday and continued to complain about his stomach. He also started coughing later in the day. Mira started coughing and I have an itchy, running nose head cold. Margo is the only one who seems fine but she slept in today and I thought she may be coming down with what we have, so she stayed home from morning preschool.
I decided to finally dye those play silks I bought for Mira awhile ago. I bought two dozen ladies silk handkerchiefs at $6 for a dozen. We used my canning pot and jars to heat up the water for the dye from the Kool-Aid to set. I had the kids open packets and mix up the jars. We used lemon-aid for Yellow (I use about four packets to get a nice bright yellow, or it turns out very pale), Lemon-lime for green (about two packets), Orange for orange, Grape for purple, Cherry for red, and Berry Blue for blue. You can play around with the number you dye at one time. The more you have stuffed in the jars the more mottled they will be. Grape is hard to get to turn out a nice color and not just a really dark grape- be warned. I just stick one or two in the jar dry and mix it them around a bit and check them every once in awhile. When it's the color I want, I take them out and rinse with cold water and hang to dry. That's it! The kids had a great time with this and Margo used her own little drying rack and clothespins. I sort of wish I bought some more. I also wish I had some Pink Lemon-Aid Kool-Aid, which makes a nice dark pink. They'll smell a little fruity for awhile and you're house will smell very fruity while you're dying them.
My plan is to find a nice little basket with a lid that Mira can take on and off to pull these little playsilks out of. I'll post a picture of her with her present after I find the perfect basket! For now, here's a some photos of the dying process.
